In line with Anglo American’s Business Continuity Policy and Objectives, Anglo American Platinum in Rustenburg and Mokopane (Mogalakwena) have identified priority hazards that could pose potential danger to ‘doorstep communities’ surrounding Mining Operations. In response to these identified threats, Anglo American Platinum have appointed DMS NPC to address these hazards by developing a communication and response plan in collaboration with the identified communities. In particular, a Community Based Early Warning System, in collaboration with community members and other relevant stakeholders, is currently being developed and implemented. Emphasis is place on communication (early warning and reporting), evacuation and cooperation with mine and local authorities.
The approach to the development of CBEWS and associated community emergency response plan is aligned to the internationally recognised ‘People-Centred Early Warning System Framework’, focussing on risk knowledge, monitoring, response capability and warning communication.
These components will be factored and integrated into the following project steps, set out in two phases:
