Community Outreach Workshop – Disaster Management Volunteer Base, Fish Hoek, Cape Town

January 2020

“Things never go wrong at the moment you expect them to. When you're completely relaxed, oblivious to any potential dangers, that's when bad things happen.” - C.K. Kelly Martin

DMS NPC facilitated a Community Outreach Workshop at the Disaster Management Volunteer Base, Fish Hoek, Cape Town on behalf of the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a project funded by the UK Met Office.

The purpose of the workshop was to generate awareness and collect information regarding the Impact Based Severe Weather Warning System. Participants included communities from both Masiphumelele and Ocean View Communities, and included stakeholders from Disaster Management, SAWS and the City Council. Community members participated enthusiastically in group activities assisting in providing information about vulnerable groups that need to receive early warnings, developing early warning messages and identifying actions communities can take in response to community early warnings.

Facilitators were Francis Hoets and Elizabeth Webster.
