Integration of Micro Disaster Risk Assessment findings into the Provincial Level 1 Disaster Management Plan (DMP) - Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Gauteng CoGTA)

2021

“We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: So many lives wouldn't have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness.” – Petra Nemcova

In terms of the Disaster Management Act (No. 57 of 2002), provinces are required to compile provincial disaster management plans. Gauteng Province’s disaster management plan was approved in 2020 and is now due for review following the completion and outcomes of the Micro Disaster Risk Assessment conducted for the Gauteng Province.

The key intended outcomes of this plan are the integration of Disaster Risk Management into the strategic and operational planning and project implementation of all primary and secondary role-players within the province, the creation and maintenance of resilient communities within the area and an integrated, fast and efficient response to emergencies and disasters by all role-players.

Gauteng Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), recognising this imperative, has appointed DMS NPC to integrate the Micro Risk Assessment into the Provincial Disaster Management Level 1 Plan.

Project Phases:

  • Phase 1: Planning & Kick-off
  • Phase 2: Current Reality Assessment
  • Phase 3: Integration of Current Reality Assessment & Micro Disaster Risk Assessment Findings
  • Phase 4: Final Delivery
